The 62nd Scouting Group
Supporting children and young people in Horfield for over 110 years, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.
The 62nd Bristol (Horfield Methodist and Parish Church) Scout Group was founded in 1913 as 62nd Horfield Methodist, Bristol. At the time we had a black and green neckerchief. In the late 1960s we merged with the 141st Horfield Parish Church Group and our neckerchief changed to incorporate the burgundy colour of the 141st one. We were registered as a charity in 1964, Charity Number 302174.
When the Groups merged we moved in with the 141st at our current hut when the rooms upstairs at Horfield Methodist Church became too small for our burgeoning Cub pack. The current hut was one of a series of nine on the field built during the Second World War as part of a local Army camp, and the outlines of some of the, now demolished, other huts are often visible on the adjacent Wellington Hill Playing Field in dry weather.
In 2010 we were instrumental in a successful campaign to prevent the potential sale of and development on the adjacent field, securing its future availability for the use of local residents and other community groups.
We celebrated our centenary with a BBQ in 2014 with many previous volunteers and members in attendance.
Our Group has continued to grow over the years to comprise a Beaver Scout Colony, two Cub Scout Packs and two Scout Troops, as well as a local Explorer Scout Unit, supporting the development of young people aged from 6 to 17 years old from the local area. Many local residents as well as a few well known Bristolian faces have fond memories of their time with us.
